But later became more known when the city's protestant Bishop was martyred in front of the cathedral in 1955 during the reign of the Bloody Queen Mary. Those seeking a bit of history, King Henry III approved the build of Blackfriars and Greyfriars using oak trees from the Forest of Dean which can still be seen in the city today and popular locations for weddings.
Gloucester is also home to Britains most inland Docks which were granted city port status in the Tudors period. Following the considerable investment, the docks are a hive of activity with the Gloucester Quays Outlet, bars & restaurants and host to the Tall Ships Festival and the Food & Drink Festival that takes place in July.
